A home can be both an asset and a monthly obligation.
One of the difficult financial questions during divorce is that the value of keeping a home cannot be understood only by looking at its equity. The person keeping it may also need to consider the ongoing cost of maintaining that home after separation.
- Can the assumed post-separation income support the monthly housing cost?
- What other living expenses must be paid from the same income?
- How much estimated equity might be available if the home were sold?
- Would keeping the home require refinancing, a buyout, or other financing?
- Are taxes, repairs, insurance, maintenance, or future costs missing from the assumptions?
The calculator intentionally does not answer “keep” or “sell.” Its job is to help you see the financial assumptions behind the question so you can make a better-informed decision with appropriate professional guidance.
